El discurs de Pau Casals

El 11 de setembre de 1714, Barcelona es rendeix a les tropes dels Borbons, una dinastia francesa que en la persona de Felip V instaura un sistema absolutista a les terres conquerides. Això comporta que, als territoris de l’antiga Corona d’Aragó com Catalunya, la liquidació de les institucions i del sistema constitucional propis mitjançant el decret de Nova Planta (1716): Catalunya deixa de tenir un estat propi i s’integra definitivament al que serà Espanya (que neix com a tal amb la Constitució de 1812; malgrat que per alguns historiadors no és fins la del 1830).

Al 2016 farà 300 anys que no tenim estat propi.

Text del discurs en català i anglès:

"Aquest és l'honor més gran de la meva vida.
La pau ha estat sempre la meva més gran preocupació. Ja en la meva infantesa vaig aprendre a estimar-la. Quan jo era un noi, la meva mare —una dona excepcional, genial—, ja em parlava de la pau, perquè en aquells temps també hi havia moltes guerres.
A més, jo sóc català. Catalunya avui és una província d’Espanya, però què ha estat Catalunya? Catalunya ha estat la nació més gran del món. Us explicaré per què. Catalunya va tenir el primer Parlament, molt abans que Anglaterra. Catalunya va tenir les primeres Nacions Unides. En el segle XI totes les autoritats de Catalunya es van reunir en una ciutat de França —aleshores Catalunya— per parlar de la pau, en el segle XI. Pau en el món i contra, contra, contra la guerra, la inhumanitat de les guerres. És per això que estic tan i tan feliç de ser aquí amb tots vostès. Perquè les Nacions Unides, que treballen únicament per l'ideal de la pau, estan en el meu cor, perquè tot allò referent a la pau m’hi va directament.
Fa molts anys que no toco el violoncel en públic, però sento que ha arribat el moment de tornar a tocar. Tocaré una melodia del folklore català: El cant dels ocells. Els ocells, quan són al cel, van cantant: "pau, pau, pau” i és una melodia que Bach, Beethoven i tots els grans haurien admirat i estimat. I, a més, neix de l'ànima del meu poble, Catalunya."

"This is the greatest honour I have ever received in my life.
Peace has always been my greatest concern. Yet in my childhood I learned to love it. My mother—an exceptional, brilliant woman—used to speak to me about it when I was still a child, because in those years there were also a lot of wars.
What is more, I am a Catalan. Today, a province of Spain. But what has been Catalonia? Catalonia has been the greatest nation in the world. I will tell you why. Catalonia has had the first parliament, much before England. Catalonia had the first United Nations. All the authorities of Catalonia in the Eleventh Century met in a city of France, at that time Catalonia, to speak about peace, at the Eleventh Century. Peace in the world and against, against, against war, the inhumanity of the wars. So I am so happy, so happy, to be with you today. That is why the United Nations, which works solely towards the peace ideal, is in my heart, because anything to do with peace goes straight to my heart.
I have not played the cello in front of an audience since long years but I think I must do it this time. I am going to play a melody from the Catalonian folklore: The singing of the Birds. Birds, when in the sky, go singing: Peace, peace, peace. And this is a melody that Bach, Beethoven and all great people would have admired and loved. And, in addition, it springs up from the soul of my country: Catalonia."
